I
majored in History and Economics at Oxford University and later I did
postgraduate work in Economic History. I am also a published translator
of Chinese literature. I am a specialist in teaching humanities subjects
from World and U.S. History to Classical Civilisations, Literature and
Economics. I hope that the breadth of perspectives I can bring to each
subject enriches the teaching experience for my students. I have
experience of teaching many syllabuses including AP and SAT History and
Economics, as well as British courses such as GSCE and A Level.
My
teaching approach is modelled on the one-to-one tutorial system used at
Oxford and Cambridge. My students are encouraged to prepare thoroughly
for each class and during class are expected to apply concepts and offer
opinions. It is not enough to passively receive information, because
the goal is to master it and apply it confidently. For example, in
History, I require students to study maps to understand the relationship
between history and geography, and to think creatively about the
reasons for historical events and their consequences. Similarly in
Economics, my students are encouraged to apply economic theory to
interpret and explain the world around them.
Humanities subjects
are often among the most challenging to approach through a non-native
language but yet they can be the most rewarding. This is not only for
their subject matter, but for the skills they teach such as creative and
imaginative thinking and problems solving, which are sometimes seen to
be weaknesses of the Chinese education system. It is hugely satisfying
to see my students gaining the confidence to engage with humanities
subjects which will greatly broaden their world view and understanding
and equip them better to succeed in the wider world.
